About the Event

We are delighted to announce the WWRF Huddle 2025, scheduled to be held on 23–24 September 2025 in Brasília, Brazil.

As the mobile industry debates the ROI from 4G and 5G, the path to 6G remains uncertain—raising critical questions about sustainability, profitability, and innovation.
WWRF Huddle 2025 will explore how 6G can deliver on the promises of ubiquitous intelligence, sustainability, and digital transformation. Through focused discussions on spectrum, security, standards, and emerging use cases, the event will address global priorities while highlighting regional opportunities, particularly in Latin America.

In the fast-evolving mobile and wireless world, it's easy to focus on the technology i.e.—what's new, what's next, what's ground-breaking. However, there is ongoing debate within the wireless industry over the profitability and return on investment on 4G and 5G, and what this may mean for next-generation technologies from the business perspective. Many feel that the industry is moving too fast, resulting in reluctance to commit resources on 6G research and development.

WWRF's 2025 Huddle will look at how we can rehabilitate 6G R&D in a way that operators can seamlessly transition from 4G/5G to 6G while preserving their revenue potential from 5G and evolve to benefitting from 6G, especially from the overarching visions of ubiquitous connectivity for all, ubiquitous intelligence and sustainability as stipulated by ITU IMT-2030 framework.

The Huddle will discuss ways in which 6G will enable the convergence of the physical world with the digital world and support new use cases and applications to provide value to end users. The Huddle will focus on the sub themes of security, sustainability, novel applications, spectrum, emerging standards and the digital transformation of society. Participants will gain a broad overview of the current status of mobile communications and learn about the techno-economic challenges facing 6G.

Moderator: Dr. Nigel Jefferies, Chairman, WWRF

As the ITU’s IMT-2030 vision moves from framework to actual technical performance requirements of 6G, Latin America has a once-in-a-generation chance to make sure the next “G” is also the region’s “G”. 6G’s promise of AI-native networks, centimetre-wave spectrum, centimetre-level sensing and micro-second latency is not just a faster pipe—it is the nervous system for a carbon-smart Amazon economy, immersive classrooms, autonomous agribots across the Cerrado and resilient grids from the Pantanal to the Caribbean. Brazil, already the only Latin country with nationwide 5G-SA, shows both the opportunity and the asymmetry: its operators are virtualising cores and trialling LEO-satellite backhaul, yet per-capita fibre penetration is still one-third of OECD levels and spectrum above 7 GHz is barely on the table. These gaps crystallise the questions we must confront today. How do we align the global 6G vision—rooted in sustainability, security and ubiquitous AI—with Latin priorities of inclusion, energy transition and fintech-enabled SMEs?

Key Questions for the Session

  • How does the global 6G vision align with Latin American priorities?
  • What unique challenges and opportunities does 6G present for Brazil and the region?
  • How can Latin America have its priorities considered in global standards and position itself as a 6G leader?
  • What infrastructure investments are needed and their business implications?

Panellists:

  • ANATEL
  • Academic Research Leader
  • Industry Leaders from Brazilian Telecom Companies
  • NGMN
11:15 – 11:30 Refreshment Break

Moderator: Dr. Hendrik Berndt, Vice Chair EMEA, WWRF

The Latin American 6G network strategies need to align with the global 6G vision of an AI- native, energy-positive and sensing-integrated Internet, co-designed to address the next generation of connectivity that lifts the LA region to the next level. How do we align Brazil’s leadership in open RAN testbeds, Mexico’s manufacturing scale and Chile’s green-hydrogen corridors into regional leverage inside 3GPP and ITU-R, so that power-saving waveforms, rain-fade models for tropical climates and spectrum-sharing rules for unlicensed indigenous networks are baked into early 3GPP releases and not late patches? In this session we will look at the 6G roadmap of other regions and countries and see how it aligns with the LA’s needs and priorities.

Session Format: 8-10 Minutes presentation by each panellist followed by Panel discussion on how their regional vision aligns with global vision.

  • UK 6G Initiative

  • Latin American View
  • Japan’s 6G Vision
13:00 – 13:30 Lunch Break

Moderator: Dr. Nigel Jefferies, Chair, WWRF

In the fast-evolving world of mobile telecommunications, standards development is an intricate process, with each new release of standards refining, building, and expanding upon its predecessor. 3GPP is focusing on a crucial step toward the next-generation network architecture, balancing the dual objectives of advancing 4G/5G while laying the groundwork for 6G. This journey is about pushing boundaries, meticulous planning, and fostering collaboration on a timeline that must come together in seamless harmony.

ITU’s WP 5D is responsible for the overall radio system aspects of the terrestrial component of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) systems, comprising IMT-2000, IMT- Advanced, IMT-2020 and IMT-2030. The standards are built on inputs it receives from standard groups such as 3GPP, ARIB, TIA, IEEE to name a few.
